Website Maintenance: Why Your Online Home Needs Regular Checkups

One Saturday, on our way from visiting a friend whose dad was ill, Peculiar Keys and I were in a car when an argument sprung up about which car was better between the Honda Accord “Evil Spirit” (I have no idea why it is called that maybe this will help) and the Mercedes Benz C300 (I can’t recall exactly what Benz model but I think it was this one).

On my end, I had no contribution to make but you need to have seen Peculiar in his element. Before I knew it, worse like horsepower, mileage, torque, and top speed started flying around and all I could do was to add a few exclamations and backups because I had no idea what they were speaking about as I don’t have a car yet (God when) and unlike Peculiar, I do not have an avid love for cars.

I brought up this story because most website owners are like me. They do not know so much about their websites enough to take care of them when they should be like Peculiar, vehemently defending and interested in all the nitty gritty involved in its maintenance and sustenance.

Think of your website like your car. You wouldn’t drive it for years without changing the oil or checking the tires, right? Websites need the same kind of care to keep them running smoothly, attracting visitors, and making you proud. That’s where website maintenance comes in.

But what exactly is it? Think of it as giving your website a regular spa day. It’s not just about making it look pretty (although fresh content and updates can do that too!), it’s about keeping it safe, healthy, and performing at its best.

Here’s why giving your website the TLC it needs is so important:

1. Security Shield: Just like bad guys target unlocked doors, outdated websites are vulnerable to hackers. Regular updates plug those security holes, protecting your information and your visitors’ trust.

2. Speed Demon: No one likes a slow website as it affects the bounce rate of visitors who may not have the patience to wait for your homepage to load which is equivalent to the time it will take to cook beans. Keeping things updated and optimized makes your pages load faster, keeping visitors happy and search engines smiling. Remember, happy search engines mean better ranking, which means more people see your awesome site!

3. Broken Link Blues: Imagine clicking a link on your website and ending up in a digital wasteland. That is not so great, is it? Regular maintenance catches and fixes broken links, ensuring a smooth journey for your visitors.

4. Content King (or Queen): Fresh, interesting content is like a magnet for website visitors. Regularly adding new stuff or updating existing pages keeps people coming back for more.

5. Tech Tune-Up: Just like software on your computer, website software needs updates to stay in tip-top shape. Regular maintenance installs these updates, keeping your website humming along.

Website maintenance doesn’t have to be scary or expensive. Some basic tasks, like updating content and checking links, can be done by yourself. For the technical stuff, we here at Arete Digital can help you to handle the essential parts to ensure that your website is in tip-top shape at all times.
